Understanding 7-OH – Science, Risks, and Real-World Impact

(Addiction Policy Forum) 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a psychoactive component of kratom — and it’s showing up in increasingly in new concentrate and synthetic forms in products found in gas stations and convenience stores. These newer formulations have increased concerns among researchers, clinicians, and advocates about misuse, unpredictable potency, and emerging health risks. Even though kratom is widely available, there’s still limited public understanding of how synthetic and concentrated 7-OH products actually work in the body and how they can impact individuals and communities.

This webinar unpacks what we currently know about 7-OH in a clear, accessible way. We discuss the latest research on its pharmacology, effects, and risks.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Nicole Avena, Associate Professor of Neuroscience at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Visiting Professor of Health Psychology, Princeton University

  • Dr. C. Michael White, Professor and Chair, Department of Pharmacy Practice, University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy; Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor

  • David Bregger, Advocate for Kratom Regulation
