DEA Warns Campuses About Counterfeit Pills

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - College students are settling into their new routines for fall, and the Drug Enforcement Administration is working hard to ensure those routines do not include what could be a fatal mistake.

“Counterfeit pills are out there and our young people are especially susceptible,” Brian McNeal, the public information officer for the DEA Detroit Division, said.

McNeal said overdoses and drug poisonings are a public health crisis right now, and pills are a major contributor. “You know the university setting was a time for experimentation back in the day,” McNeal said. “Well, unfortunately, experimentation with synthetic opioids like fentanyl can lead to a first-use overdose or drug poisoning.”

Drug overdoses are going down across the country, according to McNeal. He believes education and awareness are helping those statistics drop.
